So, let’s start with the definition of Artificial Intelligence.
What is Artificial Intelligence?
As the name suggests, “Artificial Intelligence“, What do you understand?.
It means intelligence that is artificial. Right?.
Let’s break it into more detail.
What do you understand by “Artificial“?.
In my opinion, Artificial means, that is something not belong to humans.
And What do you understand by “Intelligence”?.
According to me, Intelligence means the ability to think, learn, and understand.
Yes, Artificial Intelligence makes machines intelligent as humans. The main objective of Artificial Intelligence is to make machines powerful and thoughtful just like humans.
Artificial Intelligence is a broad area of Computer Science. AI allows machines to mimic the human.
Artificial Intelligence makes machines so powerful so that machines can take decision by self. AI gives the machine the power of common sense, reasoning skills, and decision-making skills.
Nowadays, all of us heard about Robotics. AI is used in Robots to make robots behave like a human.
But, AI is not limited to Robotics only. Nowadays, Most sectors are using Artificial Intelligence. I will discuss the applications of AI in the next section.
History of AI.
As most of us think that Artificial Intelligence is the latest technology. But, do you know that its invention was started in the 1950s.
I will discuss, how Artificial Intelligence has grown year by year. If you are not interested in the history of AI, you can skip this section.
- In 1950, Alan Turing proposed the Turing Test. In the same year 1950, Isaac Asimov proposed the Three Laws of Robotics.
- 1951, the first AI-based program was written.
- In 1955, the first self-learning game playing program was created.
- In 1959, the MIT AI lab was set-up.
- 1961, the first robot was introduced into GM’s assembly line.
- In 1964, They saw the first demo of an AI program that understands natural language.
- In 1965, the first chatbot “Eliza” was invented.
- 1974, the first autonomous vehicle was created at Stanford AI Lab.
- In 1989, Carnegie Mellon created the first autonomous vehicle using a neural network.
- 1997, IBM Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov at chess.
- In 1999, Sony introduced AIBO. In the same year, the MIT AI Lab demonstrated the first emotional AI.
- 2009, Google started building self-driven cars.
- 2010, Narrative Science AI demonstrated the ability to write reports.
- In 2011, Siri, Google Now, and Cortana became mainstream.
- In 2015, Elon Musk and others announced a 1 billion dollar donation to Open AI.
- 2016, UC Berkley launched the center for human-compatible artificial Intelligence.
- In 2018, Google launched “Duplex“. Duplex is a virtual assistant. It is an AI program.
So, as we saw, AI is not a new technology. Its growing year by year.

As I discussed in the previous section, AI allows machines to learn, think, and make decisions. So how machines learn?.
So, for that purpose Machine Learning come into the picture. Machine Learning is the subpart of Artificial Intelligence. Machine Learning has various algorithms.
In machine learning, machines learn from the training data with the help of different algorithms. After training, machines are able to predict or make decisions.
Machine Learning has basically three types of learning-
- Supervised Learning.
- Unsupervised Learning.
- Reinforcement Learning.
Based on the problem, learning is applied.

1. Self- Driven Cars
Self-driven cars are an example of Artificial Intelligence. In self- driven cars, no driver is needed. The car is well verse with AI technology.
In self-driven cars, only you need to enter your destination. You don’t need to give any instructions like how to use a break, when to stop.
These smart cars automatically detect obstacles. So that’s all are possible just because of Artificial Intelligence.
2. Sophia ( A Robot)
Sophia is the product of Hanson Robotics. Hanson Robotics is the Hongkong based company. Sophia was activated in 2016.
Sophia can communicate with the help of natural language processing. She can create different facial expressions just like humans.
Now, Sophia has citizenship in Saudi Arabia. She is the first robot citizen.
So, this is possible because of Artificial Intelligence.
3. Google Assistant/Siri/Alexa
We all know about these terms. Google Assistant, Siri, and Alexa. So do you think, how they operate?
They all are the example of Artificial Intelligence. You only need to pass your query to them, and in a few seconds, they give you a reply. So this is happening with the help of Natural language processing.
You can connect different gadgets of your house with Amazon Alexa. Then you can operate all gadgets with Alexa.

Product Recommendation is used in online shopping sites. They collect your previous shopping trends. And recommend new items based on them.
Suppose, if you buy jeans and a pair of shoes. So, when you visit again on that site, you will see the recommendation of some other kind of jeans and shoes.

Yes. Now it’s possible because of AI. A chatbot is an AI-based tool, who performs the same job as human customer support does.
They can take your query, process on it, and resolve your query.

Do you even think, when you post an image on Facebook, so how facebook tag your friends with their names?
This is Artificial Intelligence. Facebook uses image recognition, which helps to recognize image of a person.
This feature makes our life easier. Before this feature, we did it manually. But now, it automatically identifies images and tags with names.
7. GPS
GPS gives you real traffic updates. Like which road has less traffic. It can also give you the exact timing of your arrival at a certain location.
Suppose when you start driving, so you enter your start location and destination. So based on these locations, google smart maps give you an exact arrival time. Along with that, it also suggests the path which takes less time.
So, this is possible because of AI.
8. Pandora.
Pandora is a unique music site that uses artificial intelligence. It helps you to find the next song that you need to listen to.
This is not a random selection of songs. The people behind Pandora imbued their musical DNA into the AI to the extent that professional musicians actually work.
They analyzed every song in the world. Then they break it down by 400 musical characteristics.
So when you select any song, AI will analyze the song and select music of a similar style, flow, and substance. So your next song will be much similar to the previous song.

9. NOMURA
Nomura Securities is using Artificial Intelligence to analyze the insights of experienced stock traders.
It is the new stock trading system. It stores a vast amount of trading data and predicts the future share market price.
Many Banks are using Artificial Intelligence to provide customer supports, fraud detection, and many more. The HDFC bank is using an AI-based chatbot “ASK EVA“. EVA can resolve your query in 0.4 seconds.
10. BLUE RIVER and Plantix
Blue River Technology is used in the Agriculture field. They invented a robot called See & Spray.
This robot uses computer vision technology to monitor and precisely spray weedicide( a chemical spray) on cotton plants.
Plantix was developed by PEAT, a berlin based AI startup. Plantix uses image recognition to detect the defects and nutrient deficiency in the soil.
You can take an image of plants from your smartphone and submit to Plantix. It will recognize and give you suggestions.
